Staff and students raise money for the earthquake appeal

More than £19,000 has been raised for the South Asia earthquake appeal, thanks to the joint efforts of the University of Luton, the student Islamic Society and the Student Union.

And the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, was first to thank all those who gave so generously. He said: “Raising such a huge amount of money is a remarkable achievement. We came together with the Islamic Society and the Student Union with one aim - to raise as much money as possible for victims of the earthquake appeal as quickly as possible - and we have achieved this.

“One of our lecturers, Dr Fiaz Hussain (on left in photo), has been instrumental in co-ordinating fundraising within the University. We would like to thank him and all our staff and students for their efforts.”

The attention of this year’s Black History Week celebrations turned to the earthquake appeal, with SU president, Kelly Paul, arranging a number of fundraising events with her colleagues.

She said: “This has been a really difficult time for students who have family back in Pakistan and Kashmir and we wanted to do something to help. The SU team was really amazed by the generous response. We are delighted that our Black History celebrations helped with the fundraising.”

The final figure was announced today following the Islamic Society’s live broadcast on Radio Ramadhan, to mark the second annual fundraising Iftaar (opening of the fast). The event, which featured an auction, stalls and talks, raised more than £11,000.

Sufian Sadiq from the Islamic Society confirmed they have more than doubled their original target. He said: "I can't believe we have raised so much money. We thought we would be lucky to raise £8,000. Students from all backgrounds came along and took part. It was an amazing afternoon."

All money raised will go directly to Islamic Relief and Muslim Aid.
