Daily Mail Beats a Retreat Under Pressure from University

The Daily Mail newspaper has backed down in a battle against the University of Luton.

The newspaper has offered to publish a letter from the University, informing its readers that its 15 July article, in which it claimed that the wife of one of the London suicide bombers had been a student at the University of Luton, was incorrect.

University Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon said: “This was the least we could expect. The July article simply wasn’t factually correct or true. The claim that there was a connection with the University was unsubstantiated and, despite being told that, the newspaper went ahead and published. The only way it appeared we could resolve this matter was to contact the Press Complaints Commission.”

The Daily Mail’s Managing Editor, Charles Garside, said in a letter to the PCC that he was “saddened” by the circumstances. He confirmed that the newspaper has amended its records and databases to reflect the true facts and offered to publish a letter of clarification from the University.

Professor Ebdon received the good news in a letter from Scott Langham at the PCC, which said: “You should also be aware that an additional benefit of resolving your complaint is that a summary of it – with wording agreed by you – will be published on the Commission’s website and bi-annual report. This will act, importantly, as a further public record of your concerns and the newspaper’s subsequent remedial action.”
