Make a Difference Day 2006

A record number of students has signed up to volunteer in Luton and the surrounding area at the annual University of Luton Make a Difference Day.

Ninety-eight students pledged their support to local, national and international organisations such as The Red Cross, Samaritans and The Pasque Charity.

Those who attended the event at the Park Square campus last week found out more about the range of opportunities available such as mentoring in schools, therapeutic massage, coaching, and supporting bereaved children.

Andrea Thorogood, the University’s Student Community Projects Co-ordinator said: “Students are more socially-aware than ever before and are keen to give something back to the community where they study. They want to help those who are less fortunate than themselves and place great value on any volunteering opportunities they can get involved with.”

The Make a Difference Day has grown year-on-year and continues to develop the University’s links with local businesses and the community.

In previous years, volunteers have painted the Dallow Learning Community Centre and Chapel Street Nursery. Throughout the year, students mentor at local primary schools and have performed drugs awareness plays at local secondary schools.

Andrea believes those who get involved will benefit in more ways than one. “We know from previous years that volunteers gain valuable skills that will improve their chances of employment after graduation. Employers are always impressed to see that students contributed to their community during their time at University,” she said.

Later this year, volunteers will paint St Peter’s Church hall, organise a local football tournament for local children, and will take part in the annual Luton Faith Walk.
