Representatives from dozens of UK universities have been hearing about how the University of Luton is leading the way when it comes to equality.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, was one of the keynote speakers at the Equality Challenge Unit’s Annual Conference, which was recently held at Loughborough University Conference Centre.

Professor Ebdon was invited to speak at the event because of Luton’s excellent track record in equality and diversity. In his speech he said the University of Luton prides itself on being diverse and explained that it was a ‘business imperative’.

He said: “Diversity encourages innovation, as it brings many different minds together. It enriches the educational experience – learning from experiences and perspectives that are different from ours, it improves communities, fostering mutual respect and a greater understanding, and it enhances economic competitiveness, which is vital in our global society.”

More than 100 delegates attended the two-day event. The theme was ‘Taking equality forward together’ and the event was held to help the ECU develop its action plan for the year ahead.

Professor Ebdon said equality and diversity were at the core of the University of Luton’s ethos.

He gave examples including:

  • The University’s Cultural Diversity courses - held as part of the induction of all staff.
  • Regular monitoring of student and staff figures.
  • Staging regular awareness-raising events.
  • Ensuring a diverse mix of people are represented on key committees.

The University has one of the most diverse student and staff populations in the country. Some 45 per cent of its students are aged over 24, and 30 per cent are from ethnic minority groups. It also has twice the national average of academic staff from ethnic minority groups.
