Where would Richard be without Judy, or Ant without Dec? We can’t survive without our important partnerships.

That’s why the University of Luton’s Knowledge Network is taking a partnership approach to providing free quality networking and training opportunities for local businesses.

Working with Crabtree Development Consultants, Business Link, and the M1 Knowledge Exchange, four new networks have been successfully established in the key sectors of care, construction, engineering and manufacturing.

This integrated approach to networking ensures that companies have access to the widest availability of skills and expertise.

Project Manager, Gary Kirby, commented: “These new partnerships are great news for businesses because they are getting the very best training and advice specific to their skills and expertise.

“What’s more, funding from the European Social Fund (ESF) means that they don’t have to pay for training that has a commercial value of hundreds of pounds.”

Networks meet at least once a month to discuss topics that have been decided by the members.

Meetings are facilitated by industry experts, who are willing to share their skills and knowledge, and to provide best practice tools and techniques to take back to the workplace.
Members are encouraged to discuss common issues and to bring their own business problems to the meetings to work out practical solutions.

Last month more than 50 delegates attended the Care Cooperative network ‘Staff Motivation’ courses organised by Crabtree and the Knowledge Network. The huge response led to additional workshops being organised.

Some of the topics selected by Network members to run over the coming months include: Protection of Vulnerable Adults, Appraisal & Supervision, Leadership and Management, and Presentational Skills.

The Business Link Manufacturing network will also run a series of events covering Visual Management to Value Stream Mapping, Organisational Culture, Development & Change, and Delivering Process Change.

The M1 Knowledge Exchange and the Knowledge Network have provided business skills training to 40 plus engineering companies in Financial and Management Accounting, Customer Contact Skills and What’s New in Lean and Agile Manufacturing.

Other courses set to run include Supply Chain, Recruitment, Innovation and Product Development.

The Building Together construction network – managed by the Knowledge Network and Crabtree – will be addressing topics that affect the sector such as Skills Shortage, Recruitment, Taxation and Procurement, but will also be providing professional and vocational training in areas such as Leadership and Management, Marketing and Presentation, and Motivational Training and Techniques.

“People need to make the most of these sessions while they are running,” said Gary. “You just can’t beat advice and guidance from industry insiders.”
