Filmmakers, journalists, writers, broadcasters and policy-makers will descend on the University of Luton next week for a major conference which will explore the role of the media in Europe.

East of England MEP, Richard Howitt, will open the two-day conference entitled ‘Media in the Enlarged Europe’, which will examine current and future developments in the media industry and the creative arts in the European Union, with particular emphasis on the effects of European enlargement.

Fifty speakers from more than 20 countries, including Australia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK, will deliver papers on subjects ranging from European media policy and media industries, to media representations of European identity and journalistic practice.

Jason Wilson, from the University’s Research Institute of Media, Art and Design, said: “This is one of the few academic conferences in the UK this year dealing specifically with European media. We are very pleased to be hosting such a wide variety of eminent scholars, practitioners and media professionals at what promises to be a world-class event.

“This is an important event for the Research Institute of Media, Art and Design, and the University. It is very appropriate that the conference is taking place in a town and a University that are very Europe-facing.”

The event will include the UK premieres of several new documentary films as well as poetry readings and music, and a photographic exhibition at the hat Factory arts centre in Luton.

The conference will be held on 5 and 6 May. Tickets cost £40 per person or £20 for concession holders. Staff or students from the University of Luton, its partner colleges and local educational organisations, as well as members of the press and broadcast media are welcome to attend free-of-charge.
