Increase in offers but enquiries are down

The number of clearing offers at the University of Bedfordshire has risen by 60 per cent, compared with the same period last year, despite reports of a national downturn.

Although the University has recorded a lower volume of general enquiries, staff at its Clearing Centre have confirmed that more students had applied through clearing since A-level results day on 17 August.

Moira Hampson, Director of Student Recruitment and Admissions at the University of Bedfordshire, believes there are several reasons for this. She said: “UCAS has now placed all course and university information online, so it means students can go through all the course information before ringing universities.

“The increase in offers and the drop in general enquiries can be attributed to the fact that students have done their research and know exactly which course they want before they get in touch.

“In addition, more students are choosing to study closer to home, so some change their minds when they realise they will be studying and living away from loved ones.”

The University’s clearing team has been taking calls from prospective students from around the UK since A-level results day on 17 August. The lines will remain open until the middle of September with offers being made over the phone.

The student liaison team is currently running tours of at the Luton and Bedford campuses. These will take place every hour from 10am to 2pm on weekdays.

For enquiries about course availability, call the clearing hotline on 0800 013 0925. To read about other students who have come through clearing visit www.beds.ac.uk/clearing.
