Garth Crooks and Greg Dyke to receive honorary degrees

Sports commentator Garth Crooks and former Director-General of the BBC Sir Greg Dyke (photo) will be attending the graduation ceremonies of one of the final cohorts of the University of Luton next week.

On Tuesday (5 September) Greg Dyke, successful broadcaster, journalist and best-selling author will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree in recognition of his contribution to broadcasting in the UK.

His glittering career includes being Chairman of the Independent Television Association (1992-94); Chairman of GMTV (1993-94); and at various times a director of Channel Four Television, ITN and BSkyB.

He was Director-General of the BBC from 2000 to 2004. He has since written best seller Inside Story, which analyses the relationship between the BBC and the British government, and in August 2004, he officially took up the post as chancellor of the University of York. 

On Friday (8 September) Garth Crooks, the former Tottenham Hotspur striker, will become an Honorary Master of Arts in recognition of his sporting, broadcasting and philanthropic achievements.

He is most notable as his role as commentator on BBC One’s flagship Saturday night football show Match of the Day. He was the first black Chairman of the Professional Footballers Association and was awarded an OBE in 1999 in the Queen’s birthday honours for his services to football.

The graduation ceremonies will see more than 1,900 students receiving University of Luton degrees over four days. They will be among the final cohorts of graduates being recognised since the University merged with Bedford’s De Montfort University’s campus to become the University of Bedfordshire on 1 August.

Professor Les Ebdon, Vice Chancellor, said: “I will be extremely pleased to congratulate the success of all our graduates next week, who have all worked extremely hard to receive their degrees.

“The University also wishes them the best of luck on the exciting journey they are about to embark on, as they now possess the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their chosen careers.

“We will also be awarding honorary degrees to both local and national celebrities who are highly recognised in their fields.”

Other honorary awards will be handed to:

Dr Nazia Khanum OBE in recognition of her contribution to community relations and equal opportunities in Luton

Antony Hopkins CBE in recognition of his achievements as a broadcaster and his contribution to the musical life of Luton

Alan Cook CBE in recognition of his contribution to the development of the provision of financial services in the UK

Sheikh Walid Ahmed Juffali in recognition of his achievements as entrepreneur and philanthropist and his contribution to internationalism and inter-faith relations, and

Geoffrey Farr in recognition of his contribution as Governor, Vice Chair and Chair of Governors, and as Chair of the Tenth Anniversary Committee of the University Court.

The graduation ceremonies will be held in St Mary’s Church, Luton, with a procession through the town on Tuesday leaving the Town Hall at 1.30pm.
