Computing is as easy as ABC at Bedfordshire

7 Dec 2006 11:44:05

The launch of a new computing centre at the University of Bedfordshire is set to benefit businesses in the region, thanks to a new scheme which will see students working with mentors on providing IT solutions for businesses.

The Academic into Business Computing centre (ABC) will provide computing students with work experience in a professional work environment, whilst businesses are set to benefit from the expertise of staff and students from the University.

Learning Development Manager Mark Hooper said: “Students are working with real businesses to meet specific requirements, we provide the facilities and support to enable them to do this successfully. This real-life experience will help the students become more employable through their hands-on experience dealing with clients and project and time management.”

The concept was devised by the Head of Computing and Information Systems, Professor Carsten Maple to provide the opportunity for undergraduates to work on computing projects as part of their degrees.

The Centre, has a dedicated computer lab with state-of-the-art facilities including commercial software and a built-in library with research books and journals, and also a project development area for students to work and meet with clients.

Launched in September 2006, the ABC has already been approached to handle a number of projects. These include designing a promotional computer game for a commercial market, developing E-commerce websites, and developing a dynamic system to predict market trends.

It is hoped between 10-15 students will be involved in the project this year, with this number growing to 50 students each year within the next five years.

Carsten said: “The scheme was devised to give students a taste of working in the computing industry. With more and more students graduating every year the University is committed to providing graduates with the skills required to work in the real-world.

“Not only will this offer students invaluable knowledge, it will also provide them with useful contacts and experience, which could help them land their first job.”
