England and Saracens flanker Margaret Alphonsi was celebrating last weekend when she was named Women’s Rugby Personality of the Year at the International Rugby Board’s Awards in Scotland.
The 22-year-old was up against stiff opposition for the accolade - she was short-listed against New Zealand fly-half, Anna Richards, and France number eight, Delphine Plantet, for the coveted award.
Maggie was a driving force in England’s run to the Women’s Rugby World Cup final in Canada, where they lost 25-17 to New Zealand in September.
The shortlist was selected by the coaches of each of the participating teams at the World Cup finals.
She said: “Winning the award was amazing - I really didn’t expect it. It was a team effort and the award equally belongs to all those who were part of the English team and management at the World Cup."
Maggie studied for a BSc honours in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Bedfordshire. Alongside playing for Saracens, she works as Rugby Development Officer for the women’s section of the Club. Part of this role involves visiting schools in London to encourage teenage girls to play rugby.
Maggie added: "The event was amazing. I got to meet some really influential people and famous rugby players.
“I am so pleased to have won this award. I have really enjoyed this season. Being part of a team that won the Six Nations Grand Slam and finishing as runners-up in the IRB Rugby World Cup final has been terrific. It has certainly capped off a great year for me.”
Maggie is the second English woman to win the award, with Wasps fly-half Shelley Rae scooping the award in 2002. The award ceremony took place at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow on 26 November.
