England netball shooting starlet Lucy Cadge has been named Bedford Sports
Personality of the Year.
The 19-year-old goal attack was presented with
the prestigious title at the Bedford Sports Awards on Monday (11 Dec), which are
hosted by Bedford Borough
Council and Sport Bedford.
Lucy is currently in the second year of her course at the University of Bedfordshire, where she is training to become a PE teacher. She has captained the England Under 17 and Under 19 squads and is currently training for trials for the England team which will be competing in the European Championships in Belfast in March.

At the ceremony she was also awarded a Sport Scholarship from the University, to give her a helping hand in pursuing her netball career, along with fellow students who represent Great Britain or England in their chosen sport.
She said: “I am really honoured to have been named Bedford Sports Personality of the Year, it’s pleasing to know all the hard work I put into the sport has been recognised.
“Netball has been a passion of mine since my mum took me to watch her play when I was a toddler. I played at county and regional level when I was at school and was put forward for the England Netball Talent Camp to play at a national level when I was 14.
“I have to travel all over the country to take part in the different competitions and leagues and the scholarship from the University will really help towards my travel costs and allow me to buy new training gear.”
Lucy spends her spare time training. As well as playing for England, she coaches local children and plays for the Hatfield Mavericks Super league Team, which is currently being televised by Sky Sports. She also plays for Wyvern in Luton and the University’s team. Prior to coming to University she played for Ipswich Ladies until she was 18.
She added: “I am really pleased the Mavericks Super league is being televised, which shows the game is starting to be taken seriously. When I become a PE teacher it will be great to inspire children to strive to be top netball players.”
The University’s Sport Scholarship Scheme pays students up to £1,500 a year to support their sports commitments during their studies. The scholarship scheme also recognises athletes on the fringes of national selection, including those who participate in development squads or training camps.

Among the other sport scholars are:
Dr Gordon Mellor, Senior Lecturer at the School of Physical Education and Sport, who presented the scholarships at the ceremony, said: “We are very pleased to have one of our students awarded local Sports Personality of the Year. Lucy is an extremely talented and committed netball player, which highlights the high calibre of sports students studying here.
“We have a long tradition of sporting excellence and we are very pleased to help students fulfil their potential at national level with the scholarship scheme and build hopefuls for the 2012 London Olympics.”
The University’s Sport Scholarships have assisted former sports students including rugby star, Maggie Alphonsi, who was last week named Women’s Rugby Personality of the Year at the International Rugby Board’s Awards ceremony, for her impressive performance in the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
The grants have also helped Korean martial arts champion, Noreen Khan, who won the world title in 2004 and 2006.
