Students using testing equipment

Students from Leon School and Sports College in Milton Keynes got some hands-on Sport Science experience last week, when they attended a specially-arranged Taster Day at the University of Bedfordshire.

The Year 12 students had a tour of the University’s learning facilities at its Luton campus, before carrying out flexibility and fitness tests at the Sport Science labs in Park Square.

Sport and Exercise Lecturer, and event organiser, David Pears said: “The Sport Science Taster Day gave the students the chance to see the facilities and equipment they can expect when they study the subject at university.

“We also held a session about the range of subjects they can study and what is expected in assignments at degree level.”

The students discovered how flexible their hamstrings and lower backs were by carrying out sit-and-reach tests, and also got to analyse their fitness levels using specially-designed exercise bikes.

The day concluded with a friendly football match between the University’s fourth team and the visitors, which finished 4-2 to the University.

Liam Medlyn, a student from Leon School and Sports College, said: ”It was a really good day and I have a better understanding of what university life is like and the workload involved. I enjoyed using the equipment and learning more about how the body works.”

Discussing the match, he said: “It was a good match, but there were a few mistakes which cost us goals. We really improved in the second half and managed to pull back a couple of goals, but it wasn’t to be. It was good fun despite the defeat.”
