A Government watchdog has praised the collaboration between the University of Bedfordshire and one of its partner institutions in Beijing, in a major audit of UK universities links with China.
The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) found very good working relations have been established between the University of Bedfordshire and its Chinese counterpart, the China Agricultural University’s International College at Beijing.
The collaboration between the two institutions allows Chinese students to start studying their business related or media production degree in Beijing, and continue their second or final year of the course at the University of Bedfordshire.
The report stated procedures and processes have been put into place so that students studying in China get a higher education experience that is broadly comparable to that of students studying in the UK.
The University was also commended for placing an emphasis on the ‘student experience’ while students from China were in the UK, offering them strong support and helping them to develop their English language skills.
Bedfordshire’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, said: “We are delighted our collaboration with China has been so highly praised and the QAA has expressed confidence in the relationships we have forged. I am proud of the way in which staff have responded to the needs of the Chinese students.
“As a University which has the third highest percentage of international students in the country, we can only achieve this by providing excellent support to students studying in the UK.”
Peter Williams, Chief Executive of QAA, added: "Our initial survey of all UK higher education institutions showed that nearly half (82) have established links with Chinese universities.
"We chose 30 institutions to complete a desk-based
analysis of their partnership arrangements, and a further 10 to undertake full
audit visits.
"We found substantial strengths in the links that have been forged, and were impressed by
the care and prudence with which these links have been developed and are being
implemented by both the Chinese and UK partners."
The University’s links with China go back over a decade and
it has trained over 300 journalists from Beijing
in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games.
