The University of Luton has held a series of celebratory events to mark the start of the Chinese New Year (29 January) including a party at the Thistle Hotel, and a get-together at the University Chaplaincy.
More than 250 students, staff and members of the Chinese business community attended the main celebration on the 21 January at the Thistle Hotel, which was co-organised by the University and the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA). A traditional Chinese banquet was prepared by staff from the Tong Sam restaurant in Dunstable, before the evening’s entertainment got under way.
Jing Li, President of the CSSA, said: “This is our second Chinese New Year celebration party and I’m thrilled that so many people came along this evening. It is especially pleasing to have support from Chinese businesses in Luton and from as far away as Manchester.”

Entertainment on the night included traditional singing and dancing, martial arts performances and comedy sketches.
Following the entertainment Harry Wang, Regional Director from the University’s International Office, gave a speech. He said: “The University of Luton continues to attract many students from China because of its excellent reputation and because of its a well-established Chinese student community. The Chinese New Year celebrations have become a very important event in the University’s calendar.”
The evening was Sponsored by Chingland Travel in Luton, The Wang Dynasty Group, a national travel company from Manchester, and Beijing Tong Ren Tang UK Limited which supplied lucky draw prizes for the party.
The celebrations continued at the University Chaplaincy where media students and staff came together for party games, comedy sketches and musical performances. Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, spoke to the students about the valuable contribution they make to the University.

He said: “The University has strong links with China, which is highlighted by our training of more than 100 media professionals for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. We are very proud of our Chinese student community and are delighted to join with them to celebrate the beginning of the Chinese New Year.”
