Vladimir Sergunin

A University of Luton student has the Russian President to thank for helping him to secure a place on an MSc in Finance and Business Management. He was one of just 40 students to receive an important accolade from him – the Russian Federation President’s Scholarship for studying abroad.

Vladimir Sergunin from St. Petersburg, won the award partly because of his academic achievements – he’s an A grade student- and also because of his high-profile involvement with local issues.

The 22-year old has served as Vice President of the Student Council for the Government of Saint-Petersburg for two years, where he met some of the most important figures in Russian politics. He has also contributed more than 10 articles to national science journals and has attended conferences around the country.

He joins the University of Luton from the State University of Engineering and Economics in St Petersburg, where he was President of the Student Union for three years.

Speaking of his experiences at Luton Vladimir said: “The town centre is compact, so you often get to see the same people every week. People are very friendly in Luton. There are almost six million people living in St. Petersburg, so it’s a big change for me. This has been a great experience for me.”

Vladimir chose the University of Luton after a friends recommendation, and because the University is a new institution with an excellent reputation in teaching.

Vladimir said: “My course is challenging and interesting. I love the grounds at Putteridge Bury and the building is really beautiful. The whole environment is designed to help you get the most from your course.”

Vladimir hopes to return to Russia after his Master’s degree to study a PhD. He would like to run his own small marketing or finance business, or work for an international company in Russia.

Geoff Notcutt, Regional Director of International recruitment at the University of Luton said: “We are delighted Vladimir decided to study here. It is not surprising he was chosen for the award, as he has an excellent academic and working background. He had the choice of many universities in the country and chose to study at the University of Luton. This further underlines Luton’s international reputation for academic excellence.”
