The University of Luton will launch a new course in Carnival Arts Development in partnership with the country’s first National Centre for Carnival Arts, which is set to open its doors in 2007.
The new Centre is a partnership between the Arts Council England, East, Luton Borough Council (LBC) and the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), and will ensure year-round carnival arts activity in Luton, by providing workshops, seminars and showcase performances, thanks to a partnership investment of £6.2 million.
The University’s Dean of Partnerships, Professor David Barrett, will be working with the Centre to develop the new foundation degree. He said: “Luton hosts the largest one–day carnival in Europe, attracting thousands of people to the town, and generating almost £3m for the local economy. This is a huge contribution and can only grow with the opening of this Centre.
“The launch of this Centre gives us the opportunity to develop a course that will enable students to learn the necessary skills to continue the success of the Luton Carnival, and possibly work on other major carnivals around the world.”
The course is set to launch in September 2007 and will offer specialist skills in carnival arts design, production and management. Students will engage with carnival arts professionals to develop the necessary skills to work in the carnival sector and the course will also offer a direct link to film, arts and media industries.
Paul Anderson, Executive Director of Luton Carnival Arts Development Trust said: “This is an excellent partnership, where two of Luton’s finest exporters of local talent and skills are coming together to produce an exciting and innovative course. This joint effort will raise the status of carnival arts, both locally and nationally.”

Some of the new features will include state-of-the-art equipment and tools, a virtual carnival arts archive, a business resource centre, a sprung dance floor, a bar and café, and crèche facilities for staff and students.
Details of the course are set to be released in September 2006.
