If you're a budding entrepreneur, 2005 could be your year – with a little help from the University of Luton.

A series of University lectures has been specially designed for anyone interested in growing a new business.

Make a New Year resolution and keep it – by joining the lectures in January. The Basics of Building a Business, or B3 lectures as they are known, are open to anyone in the region.

There’s also a chance to win a great prize in the B3 business competition, run alongside the lectures, for the most promising and well-presented idea.

The top prize is £1,000 cash, provided by sponsors, Chamber Business. There is also £250 on offer for the best e-commerce related idea, from new sponsors e-Financial Management.

The B3 lectures began in October and start up again on 20th January, running until 10th March.

The first lecture will cover ‘how to write a business plan’ and will be taught by with Dave Welch, Business Manager with HSBC and Christophe Mermaz, the Managing Director of Light Emotions, based at the Luton & Dunstable Innovation Centre.

All of the lectures are delivered by successful entrepreneurs who have gone through the process of starting up and running their own businesses.

The course is specifically designed for and targeted at those who want to:

  • Find out about entrepreneurship and determine if it's for them
  • Learn how to do it by developing basic business skills
  • Gain practical experience of turning an idea into a business
  • Build on practical insights, the focus on the detail of how to get started and grow a business.

The second series of lectures will develop business skills in areas such as:

  • Writing a business plan
  • Protecting your intellectual property
  • Building a team
  • Marketing and sales
  • Financial analysis
  • Structuring deals
  • Presenting and communicating your ideas

These specific and interactive workshop sessions will draw on the expertise of the University entrepreneurship team and other external advisors to help develop business plans.

Although the lectures end on the 10th March, a further session will take place on the 17th March, with the winner of the Business Concept competition being named on 28th April.
