Three University of Luton students are celebrating after scooping a top TV gong at the annual Royal Television Society (RTS) Awards.
Final year students, Josef Brett, Chris Campkin and Alex East, won the best non-factual Student Television Award for their short film A Tale of Two Sisters, and the trio got to share the stage with top journalists from BBC London News and ITN’s London Tonight, who won awards in other categories.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Josef Brett said: “We are thrilled that all our hard work paid off. It was so pleasing to stand on the stage in front of so many industry people and represent the University of Luton.”
A Tale of Two Sisters is a comic story about an independent young woman who meets her American half-sister for the first time. It charts her rising frustration as her well-ordered lifestyle is turned up-side-down.
The awards recognise excellence across a range of programme-making and broadcasting skills, with the judges being drawn from across the television industry.
Jim Hornsby, who taught the students, said: “This is an excellent personal achievement for those involved. The film integrated really good camera work with imaginative editing.
“This award further illustrates the consistently high standard of work produced within the School of Media, Art and Design at the University of Luton.”
David Poyser, RTS Chairman and an award-winning documentary producer for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, said: “Previously, these awards have been dominated by other universities, so it’s great to see Luton emerging as a new winner.
“Winning such an award really encourages students in the early years of their careers. It’s fantastic for their CVs.”
The students hope the win will help them forge successful careers in film production.
A Tale of Two Sisters was also shown at the London National Film Theatre at the Eat our Shorts student film festival on 17 and 18 January.
