Students at the new University of Bedfordshire will benefit from a deal struck between the University of Luton and De Montfort University, which will keep the Lansdowne Road swimming pool open for the next academic year.

Trainee teachers, PE and sports students and, in particular, the swimming team, will now be able to continue their training at the pool, which was due to close this summer.

De Montfort University’s Polhill Campus is merging with the University of Luton to create the new University of Bedfordshire on 1 August.

The Lansdowne campus will be sold by De Montfort University next year, with the proceeds invested as part of the £34m redevelopment of Polhill, which includes a new Campus Centre to house one of Bedfordshire’s largest theatre venues, state-of-the-art sport science labs and a new en-suite accommodation block.

University of Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon said: “We are aware how important the pool is to staff and students so we are keen to find an alternative.

“After positive discussions with De Montfort and a generous anonymous donation from a member of the public, we can confirm that the pool will stay open for another year. This will give us time to start a fundraising campaign to build a new pool.

“The 30-year-old pool will, nevertheless, be closed in July 2007 so the campaign for a new pool is vital.”
