Reunited and it feels so good

Former students of the University of Luton have been getting in touch with old pals at a faster rate than ever before. That’s according to internet giant Friends Reunited which has just issued its annual league table of ‘friendly universities’.

The website that has brought together millions of old school, college and university friends across the globe, has reported that since last year’s survey, hundreds of Luton graduates have been using the site to trace old friends, and Luton has jumped a staggering 96 places to 70th place.

Each institution’s ‘friendliness’ is based on the number of former students who stay in touch via Friends Reunited.

University spokeswoman, Patricia Murchie, believes that the huge jump reflects Luton’s friendly atmosphere. “When you read through the alumni profiles on our website there is an overall consensus that students loved Luton because it was a very friendly town to study in. The close-knit campus means that students and staff get to know one another well and there is a great social scene too.

“The increase in those using the site could also be attributed to Friends Reunited’s very own co-founder, Julie Pankhurst. Last year we joined forces with Julie to encourage more Luton graduates to get in touch. Julie is a Luton graduate herself having studied software engineering here in the mid 80s.

“This seems to have struck a chord with our former students and our alumni team certainly noticed an increase in activity after the publicity. We are delighted that people are back in touch, sharing stories about their time in Luton and planning to meet up again.”

Both Friends Reunited and the University’s Alumni Association have been publicising the forthcoming reunion for those who graduated from Luton between 1995 and 1997.
The event is being organised by Social Studies graduate, Gareth Liddiatt, and will be held at the Student Union on 24 June from 8pm. Further details can be found in the message board section at www.luton.ac.uk/alumni.
