Public invited to annual student show

Members of the public are being invited to one of the biggest collaborations of art, design and media production in Luton when it goes on display next week at the annual University of Luton Media, Art and Design (MAD) Show.
Students from the University, and Barnfield and Dunstable colleges, will exhibit a selection of fine art, photography, graphic design, sculpture, media production, performance and creative writing on the ground floor of the Park Square campus, and at the gallery in the hat Factory in Bute Street.
Senior lecturer, John Stephens, is organising the event and believes that local people will be very impressed with this year’s show.
“The standard of work is very high and some of our students have already won national awards and others have been short-listed, so visitors are in for a real treat. I have no doubt that among us are stars of the future, so it’s set to be a brilliant exhibition.
“It’s particularly pleasing to have students from Barnfield and Dunstable colleges joining us this year to exhibit their work alongside that of higher education students. This is a very exciting collaboration and highlights the talent in the community.”
Among the exhibitors is Terry Massiah, who was recently commissioned to produce a mural for London Luton Airport. His latest work looks at the lynchings in America during the 50s and 60s.
Another student, Pat Ellis, has designed a piece which examines the political and religious divisions within countries, and classmate Jenny Green has based her work on body dysmorphic disorder.
Head of Media, Art and Design, Tony Eddison, said: “This is a wonderful display of the talent within the School and the neighbouring colleges. Our students have reached new heights in their creative developments supported by some of the best facilities available.
“We have combined both traditional and cutting-edge creative tools and skills to help them reach their potential, and we know that we have passed on skills that meet the expectations of employers within this sector. We have a long-standing reputation for producing highly-skilled graduates and this exhibition certainly proves that this is the case.”
This year’s sponsors include Filmstock, i10 and Bedford i-Lab, who will be awarding prizes for some of the best pieces of work. The exhibition opens to the public on 14 June and runs until 17 June. Doors open from 10am-5pm each day.
