Students praised for design excellence

Students contributing to this year’s Media, Art and Design Show at the University of Luton have been praised for the high standard of their work at a special award ceremony to mark the opening of the exhibition.

Presenting the prizes, Deputy Mayor, Cllr Michael Dolling commended their efforts. “The work that I have seen tonight is magnificent,” he said. “I’m very proud that students from our University are producing work of such a high standard. The people of Luton should come down and see this brilliant work for themselves.”

The Show, a collaboration between the University and Dunstable and Barnfield Colleges, opens to the public on 14 June at the University’s Park Square campus (ground floor) and at the hat Factory on Bute Street. It features fashion, fine art, photography, film production, interior design and media performance.

This year’s sponsors, Bedford i-Lab, Filmstock and i10 judged the entries. Winners on the evening included:

  • Lorraine Richards from Dunstable, for her use of digital media in designing disability literature in a more positive light to promote access to ability
  • Luke Maltby from Luton, for his digitally manipulated photographs of urban decay including derelict buildings around Luton
  • Samantha Lavin from Luton, for her series of short films about institutional child abuse at the infamous Industrial Schools and Magdelene Laundries in Ireland
  • Graham Currie, Craig Rock and Nathan Turner for their film ‘What a Freegan Waste!’ which looks at ‘Freeganism’ – a movement to raise awareness of how wasteful our consumer–driven, throwaway society has become
  • Zuhal Butler from St Albans, and Ying Lu Zuhal from Luton, for their documentary film ‘Continuing Greenham’ which tracks down the veterans of Greenham Common
  • Claire Young from Luton, for her photographs of an abandoned mental institution using black and white printing and toning techniques, which resulted in her winning an internship with Argento Imaging

Professor Les Ebdon, the University’s Vice Chancellor, presented some of the prizes. He said: “This is one of the best shows in recent years and this has been achieved by working with our partner colleges at Barnfield and Dunstable.

“The talent within this department and at our local colleges is immense and confirms our position as centres of excellence in Media, Art and Design.”

The exhibition will run until 17 June. Doors open from 10am to 5pm each day.
