A delegation from the Beijing Municipal Government and China’s main media organisations visited the University of Luton this week to progress the next stage of its media training partnership for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Master’s (MA) in Media Management programme has been specially designed by the University of Luton to train Beijing journalists and senior media managers for the next Olympic Games.

The delegation reviewed the project and also looked at ways to develop the relationship further - especially between the School of Media, Art and Design and the media sector in Beijing and China.

Tony Eddison, Head of the School of Media, Art and Design (MAD), said: “We are very proud to be training these media professionals who come from Chinese radio, newspapers, TV and the web.

“The delegation was made up of the highest ranking people from China’s media organisations as well as members of the Beijing Municipal Government which shows the importance of this programme. The day was a great success which concluded with dinner at Putteridge Bury where plans to strengthen our relationship were discussed further.”

Everyone involved in the project agreed to continue their co-operation and seek further opportunities to work together leading up to 2012 Olympic Games in London.

So far, 64 journalists and senior media managers have been awarded the MA Media Management, with another 17 graduating this year. The fifth group arriving in Luton in September 2006 will bring the number to over 100.

During the visit, the Chinese delegation met with Luton’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, and Professor James Crabbe, Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts, Technologies and Science.

Tony added: “The success of this programme to date highlights the University’s ability to carry out similar training for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Our School of Media, Art and Design is one of the best-equipped in the country with top quality teaching and we are close to London, so we are looking forward to developing opportunities to train our own journalists and media professionals.”

The delegation met the present group of Media Management students, to listen to feedback about how they are coping with their studies.
