Putteridge Bury entrance

New disabled access welcomed by staff and students

Staff, students and visitors with disabilities now have proper access to the ground floor facilities at the University of Luton’s Edwardian Putteridge Bury campus.

The new reception with wheelchair access was designed by Hitchin firm Widdup & Amer Architects and includes a ramp and a chairlift to allow people with disabilities access to the conference rooms, library, dining room and the extensive gardens.

It has been introduced to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act which requires all public premises to improve access for people with disabilities.

Conference and Hospitality Manager, Ciro Ascione, said: “The new reception has been well-received by all users and, in fact, the majority of people prefer it to the main entrance because its so spacious and light.”

Special plans were drawn up because of Putteridge Bury’s listed building status and work got under way, thanks to a £390,000 grant from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

There is also a new, well-lit car park with designated disabled car parking spaces as well as an extra disabled toilet and a new alarm system for wheelchair users.

Work has also started on Putteridge Bury’s new driveway and is set to be completed by the middle of April.

“The campus will look fantastic when all the work is complete,” said Ciro. “Twenty five new lamp posts will light the drive and the car park, and together with the upgraded digital CCTV system, Putteridge Bury will not only look great but will be safer for students, staff and visitors alike.”

The new drive will feature three security barriers, a speed limit of 15mph and road humps, all well-signposted with official highway signs.
