A Luton journalism student is getting ready to swap lecture theatres for a busy international newsroom when he embarks on a six-week internship with global TV news channel, CNN.

Twenty-two-year-old Jim Stenman begins his placement with the American channel over the coming weeks, and has been getting some top tips from his lecturers.

“Everyone is really excited for me. My lecturers have been so supportive, and have told me to go for it. I can’t wait to get my first week under my belt,” said Jim.

The Swedish-born student heard about the University of Luton while studying in America and after completing his first year at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania, he flew across the Atlantic to finish the final two years of the course in Luton. He is now looking forward to making his mark on the world of international journalism.

“One of my American tutors had worked at the University of Luton and she recommended the journalism course to me,” said Jim. “When I got to Europe I carried on watching CNN – a news channel I have always admired - so when talk of an internship started, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.”

Jim sent his CV to CNN and, after months of conversations, he was told the good news – that he could join the channel’s London newsdesk.

“I will be working on breaking news, business, entertainment and political stories – and so much more,” enthused Jim. “It will give me the chance to put what I have learnt into practice, to come up with ideas, pursue stories and also write for the channel’s website. The opportunities are endless.”

Jim believes English journalism is among the best in the world – and says the University of Luton has helped nurture his self-belief and individualism.

“In the UK you work far more independently than in the States and this has taught me how to stand on my own two feet and has made me stronger,” he said. “I am still learning and am very excited about learning from some of the best at CNN.”

In the meantime, Jim is working with two other students to get the University’s television channel up and running – Luton Television Network. He plans to make his mark in the media industry, so it’s almost certain that we’ll see much more of Jim in the future.
