Lecturer hits the big screen in London

Alfred Hitchcock fans will get a new perspective on one of his best-known films at a special screening in London today (15 May) when a lecturer from the University of Luton combines her own work with that of the legendary British director.

Joanna Callaghan, who lectures in video production at the University’s School of Media, Art & Design, helped to co-curate the event, and will be showing her new film at the screening at the Curzon Soho Cinema.

Her film will appear as one of a selection of short pieces that play with and challenge some of the clichés provided by Hollywood’s genre films. In Mrs De Winter’s Dualism Dilemma, Joanna combines scenes from Hitchcock’s 1940s thriller Rebecca with clips that were filmed in a studio using an actress.

Joanna explained: “I took each of the layers of the film language, separated them, and then recombined them to form a new film, inviting the audience to find fresh layers of meaning in the story.”

In addition to her role at the University, Joanna currently produces work across a range of media, including film, video, photography and installation, and has shown her work nationally and internationally.

“Having an active practice benefits my teaching, as it means I can bring current and relevant experience to my work as a lecturer. This screening is a real highlight for me and having it screened in London is fantastic,” she added.

Joanna was helped by one of her University colleagues to produce her work. Rob Munday, a technician and demonstrator at the University, edited the film, while music technology specialist, Dave Bessell, has been working on another of Joanna’s projects - a dance video.
