Master’s set to transform NHS educational leaders of the future

25 May 2006 16:31:48

A new Medical Education course aimed at the next generation of medical leaders has been officially launched at the University of Luton, with a number of local and national figures from the NHS attending the launch event earlier this month at the University’s Putteridge Bury Conference Centre.

The programme in Medical Education and Medical Education Leadership will be the first Master’s degree course to be offered by the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School (BHPMS), at the University of Luton.

It is also the first of its kind in the country to explicitly address both medical education and educational leadership development needs for those in medicine, dentistry, nursing, health and social care.

Clare Morris, Associate Dean of BHPMS, said: “The launch of this new innovative Master’s is a significant development for medical education and focuses on how we can most effectively teach and train the next generation of medical professionals.

"It offers a blended learning approach which takes the demands of healthcare professionals into consideration by offering study days with interactive and supported on-line learning.”

Keynote speaker at the launch was Dr Alan Bleakley, Academic Lead, Clinical Education Research at the Peninsula Medical School, who gave a presentation on ‘The feminizing of medical education’. He looked at the increase in women entering medicine and asked if this rise would lead to a more collaborative approach to medical education. He also questioned current learning theories and whether they will fit alongside the new approach to patient-centred healthcare.

Clare added: “Dr Bleakley’s presentation addressed a number of issues about the future of medical training that are central to BHPMS. We are also very pleased that such a well-known expert will be involved in the new course as external examiner.”

The Master’s will be led by Clare Morris and Judy McKimm. Both are experienced medical educators spanning undergraduate and postgraduate medical, nursing and healthcare education and training. The programme will be further-boosted by master-classes and workshops facilitated by visiting experts.

Applicants are welcome from those with a first degree or equivalent qualification or experience. Course participants will be based at the Putteridge Bury campus, just two miles from Luton train station and four miles from Luton Airport.
