An internationally renowned expert in environmental chemistry has been outlining the key role that analytical scientists play in the wellbeing and future prosperity of society.

Professor Les Ebdon, Vice Chancellor of the University of Luton, was speaking at the biennial dinner of the Analytical Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry in Plymouth earlier this month, where he highlighted the importance of analytical chemistry – the branch of chemistry which looks at identifying and measuring chemicals.

He said: “Measurements are now highly automated and the level of skills required from analytical scientists has earned them huge respect from fellow professionals.

“Advances in recent years means more protection for the community. For example, forensic science depends on analytical measurements, and the progress in this field over the last 10 years has been quite dramatic. This has had huge impact on society.”

Professor Ebdon also noted that the most significant change has been the new approach to drug discovery in the post genomic-age, which depends hugely on the abilities of analytical chemists to identify new pharmaceuticals which are currently being developed.

His speech comes at a time when universities are questioning the importance of chemistry. “Sciences based on analytical chemistry remain vital to our well-being and we must encourage more students to study in this field,” he added.

Professor Ebdon obtained both his BSc and PhD at Imperial College, London. He lectured in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Plymouth for several years before becoming Head of Department of Environmental Sciences in 1989 and Vice Chancellor. He has won numerous awards for outstanding contribution to science. He joined the University of Luton in September 2003.
