Privy Council says yes to University of Bedfordshire

The Privy Council has approved the preferred name of the new university for Bedfordshire, which will come into place on 1 August, when Luton officially merges with De Montfort’s Bedford campus.

The Government body confirmed it is happy for the new institution to be officially called the University of Bedfordshire, which research revealed was the firm favourite among staff, students and potential students.

Luton’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon is delighted the decision has come through so quickly.

He said: “This is the news we have been waiting for and we are very pleased that it has come through before the end of the academic year. We can now focus on getting everything ready for the 1 August when the merger will be signed and sealed.

“For the first time, Bedfordshire will have a single provider of undergraduate and postgraduate education and the new university will directly address the needs of the region’s employers and partners. The University of Bedfordshire is set to play a key role in the county’s economic development.”

The announcement comes in a week where the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEfCE) pledged £2m to help with the merger, and the Training and Development Agency (TDA) gave the new university the green light to deliver teacher training.

Professor Ebdon added: “The support from HEfCE and the TDA is also a huge boost for us. This illustrates their confidence in us to deliver a university for the entire county.”
