New university gets go-ahead for teacher training in record time

The Training and Development Agency (TDA) has given the green light for teacher training to be delivered at the new university for Bedfordshire, which will be created when Luton and De Montfort’s Bedford campus officially merge on 1 August.

The approved accreditation has come in record time - and before the final name of the new institution has been agreed by the Privy Council.

“The speed at which this decision has been reached shows the enormous confidence the TDA has in us,” said Luton’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon. “It’s certainly one of the quickest decisions I’ve ever known.

“In addition, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEfCE) has given us £2m to help with the merger and is lending us a further £1m, which further illustrates the confidence and support in the new university.

“We hope to build on the excellent standard of teacher training already delivered at Bedford and work to enhance its reputation as a centre of excellence.”

Earlier this month, the University revealed that the merger between Luton and De Montfort Bedford will boost the local economy by a further £45m on top of the £155m already being generated. This followed a report by Universities UK (UUK) which stated that for every £1m spent by a university, staff and students generate a further £1.52m by buying services and goods.

Professor Ebdon added: “Student and staff spending, as well as business activity, currently generates £155m. This is set to rise to £200m once the merger takes place. The support of the TDA and HEfCE means that this figure could well increase.

“For now, we are waiting to hear whether the name for the new University has been approved by the Privy Council and we are confident that the preferred name, chosen by staff, students and stakeholders will be approved very soon.”
