Mature students from Northampton College got an inside view of what life is like in higher education at a specially-designed Taster Day at the University of Bedfordshire earlier this week.

The students visited the University to find out more about social science and teaching courses and discover more about living and studying in Luton and Bedford as a mature student.

Lalit Joshi, Head of Student Recruitment at the University, said: “Our Taster Days give students the opportunity to find out exactly what to expect when they come to university.

“Returning to education is a big decision to make, but hundreds of mature students successfully complete their degrees every year and go on to enjoy the career of their choice thanks to the help they receive from family and friends as well as the University’s support services.

“Almost forty per cent of our students are over twenty-one, so we are very aware of the concerns they have, such as child-care provision, academic writing and balancing their work and study commitments. Staff in support services can work with them to ensure they reach their full potential and succeed.”

The students spoke to lecturers and current students about teaching methods, assignments and course content, before enjoying a tour of the University’s facilities. After the tour, the group were given advice from staff about how to fill out their UCAS application form, and the kind of information to include in their personal statements.

Jackie Whitehouse from the Learning Support Team at Northampton College said: “The Taster Day was superb. The students really enjoyed it and have received some great advice from the lecturers which really helped them to understand the academic expectations of universities. The facilities are very impressive - this is a great place to study.”

Nick Botschin, a student at Northampton, said: “This visit has opened my eyes to the services offered by universities. I am looking to train as a teacher, and the University of Bedfordshire will certainly be one of the places I will apply to. Today has been very informative”
