Members of the public and students can find out more about HIV and AIDS at a special awareness day being held at the University of Bedfordshire next Friday (1 December).
The event coincides with World AIDS Day, which is an opportunity for people to unite in stopping the spread of HIV and to end prejudice. Around 40 million people are living with the disease throughout the world, including more than 60,000 people in the UK.
Organisations including Christian Aid, Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) and Tearfund will exhibit at the event and give talks about the work they undertake in Africa, Asia and Latin America to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS, and how they care for people living with the disease, as well as AIDS orphans.
University Chaplain, Reverend Brian Trudgian, who has worked with the Students’ Union (SU) to organise the event, said: “It’s very important for the University to get involved in increasing awareness of one of the most serious development challenges of our time among students and the wider community.
“The AIDS Awareness Day is not just about raising money, but is also about education, fighting prejudice and reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and there are many things still to be done.”
People can also find out how they can work with the charities to take action to ensure vital AIDS treatment reaches those who need it most and the SU will be fundraising to help the charities’ valuable AIDS work to continue.
The charities will open their stands in the University’s Hub area from 11am at the Bedford Campus, in Polhill Avenue. Talks will take place at 1pm in the Student Union, concluding with a reflection led by Co-ordinating Chaplain Stephen Heap.
“We really hope the local community will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about HIV and AIDS. Everyone is welcome to attend,” added Reverend Trudgian.
