A business start-up course designed especially for creative entrepreneurs and self-employed arts practitioners from minority communities is being offered by the University of Bedfordshire.

Budding entrepreneurs can benefit from free professional training to develop valuable practical skills in running or working in a small business and learn to promote and market their creative enterprise, while managing their own and others’ creativity.

Delegates work towards a Certificate in Creative Professional and Entrepreneurial Development, by taking part in the PACE (Professional Training for Artistic and Creative Entrepreneurs) project, which is funded by the Higher Education European Social Fund.

The University of Bedfordshire has forged a unique partnership with the Diversity Arts Incubation Programme (DAIP) to introduce the course taught by industry professionals which covers modules such as Arts Management and Entrepreneurship, Quality and Customer Care and Black Music and the Politics of the Music Industry.

Sarah Waller, Creative Arts Sector Manager at the University of Bedfordshire, said:Ultimately, we want PACE to play a part in the success of small creative businesses by teaching skills which turn creative talent into commercial success.

“With the creative sector growing at twice the rate of the economy over the last 10 years, the course will stimulate and nurture delegates, as well as prepare them to forge a career in the sector.”

BBC Broadcaster Geoff Schumann, who is backing the project, said: “I look forward to observing some of the participants on their respective journeys. The importance of this exciting initiative is immense as it will further enhance opportunities for people to gain valuable experiences and has the potential to become a gateway into employment in the creative industries.”
