Black History Month actors performing in play

A group of Media, Art and Design students at the University of Bedfordshire will be performing a play by award-winning African scriptwriter, Sackey Sowah, to celebrate Black History Month.

Sowah’s play, Firestorm, examines the period in African history when women rebelled against the male-dominated society.

The production is directed by Media Production student, Gina Mainoo. She said: “I have taken an original play and brought it into a modern setting. Our play will analyse teenage pregnancy, forced marriage and domestic violence. We have also started adapting the play to perform for schools in the region.”

The Students’ Union will also be celebrating Black History Month, with a Black History Day on 26 October. The cultural awareness day, held between 3-7pm, will feature music, short plays, dance routines, food and exhibition boards. Students will also have the opportunity to sign up for the African Caribbean Society, which provides entertainment and awareness events throughout the year.

Firestorm will be performed on Saturday 28 October at 8pm at the hat Factory in Luton. Tickets cost £8 per person (£6 concessions) and can be ordered by calling the hat Factory box office on 01582 878100.
