Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal, has praised the University of Bedfordshire for opening up opportunities to a new generation of complementary health professionals.
The Princess was speaking at the annual graduation ceremony of the British School of Osteopathy (BSO), which awards its degrees under the University of Bedfordshire.
The ceremony, which took place at the Mermaid Conference Centre in London, saw more than 60 students receive their degrees from the University - the second cohort since a special partnership was formed with the BSO to validate its degree programmes.
The partnership agreement allows students to pay standard fees rather than private costs - a saving of several thousands of pounds every year.
The Princess Royal, who is Patron of the School, said the special partnership between the BSO and the University had allowed more students from non-traditional backgrounds to enter the profession.
She said: “The BSO is a world leader in its field and continues to set the highest standards of patient care and education. It is very rewarding to see more people training in this field and this is, in part, due to the special partnership between the BSO and the University, which has opened up this growing profession to those who may not have been able to otherwise afford it.”
Also speaking at the ceremony was the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon. He congratulated the graduands for successfully completing one of the most demanding programmes in British higher education.
He told the packed auditorium: “Those graduating should be very proud of their achievements as this degree programme combines the challenge of both theory and practice over a four year period.
“This involves an immense amount of dedication and commitment and I have no doubt they will use this enthusiasm to be innovative in the way they serve their communities.”
He also praised the vision of BSO Principal, Charles Hunt and his predecessor, Dr Martin Collins, who brought about some very important changes which have allowed the School to develop its links with the University of Bedfordshire.
The ceremony was followed by a reception which was attended by the Princess Royal, the students and their families, and other distinguished guests.
