The University of Bedfordshire's Careers Service has been commended by the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) for incorporating skills into degree courses to make students more employable.

The University received the national commendation at the Association's recent annual awards for excellence.

The University has introduced Personal Development Planning modules to degree programmes which cover CV writing, filling in application forms, interview techniques, and learning how employers recruit and find suitable vacancies.

Students can use the service to research occupations as well as employment sectors, and are encouraged to use self-assessment techniques in finding the career they would be most suited to.

Eileen Scott, Head of Careers Services, said: “This is a great achievement. It is recognition from our peers that we are excellent in delivering an innovative, vocationally oriented curriculum and confirms the exemplary work which has been carried out in integrating Personal Development Planning and career-related initiatives into the curriculum.

“The service helps students to realise what employers are looking for and shows them the value of their academic studies in employment related terms. Graduates are then able to manage and take control of their careers in the world of work, being proactive rather than just sitting back and waiting for something to happen.”

Students can use the Careers Service for up to three years after graduating. It helps them explore their options, make realistic choices in learning and in work, and put their plans into action.

Eileen added: “A good careers service at a university encourages academics to talk in terms of employability, so that academia is linked to the real world.”

The award comes hot on the heels of the University's Senior Careers Adviser, Arti Kumar, being awarded a National Teaching Fellowship, for her leading work in personal and career development.

The University's Careers Service is set to be renamed the Centre for Personal and Career Development which better reflects the services it offers.
