Luton’s hat Factory will host special film screenings later this month, featuring productions from up-and-coming and established directors, including a former Cannes winner.
The event is being organised by University of Bedfordshire lecturer, Joanna Callaghan, and Curator, Vicky Clare, and is divided into two sections.
The first set of films is inspired by poetry, rhymes and language and develops the link between words and pictures in unusual and visually abstract ways.
This will include the Norwegian film Love is the Law which won Best Short Fiction Film at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. The film takes a satirical look at the way the media constructs the news and, in particular, the role of the newsreader.
The second section looks at ‘Artists vs Hollywood’. These films explore the narrative structure of Hollywood films and alters the smooth flow to create abstract trailers, visual clichés and unusual re-enactments.
Among those being shown is the French film Trois Petits Chats, by award-winning commercial director, Francois Vogel, who directed the Hewlett Packard advert featuring a picture frame which is used to highlight different photographic pictures.
Joanna said: “It is really exciting to draw together such a diverse range of films. They are all highly original and this is a great opportunity for people to see films from around the globe.”
The screenings get underway at 7.30pm on Thursday 2 November. Tickets cost £3.50 (£2.50 with concessions) and can be ordered from the hat Factory box office on 01582 878100.
