Technology has moved into the next dimension for students studying Robotics at the University of Bedfordshire
Humanoid robots, robotic arms, a motion capture suit and wheeled robotic platforms are just some of the latest pieces of equipment available to students on the new BSc (Hons) in Robotics.
The course, available from September, can be studied as a joint degree with Artificial Intelligence or Computer Science.
Over the summer months, the Department of Computing and Information Systems has invested more than £250,000 in the new equipment.
The new robots will be used to help students develop collision detection programmes similar to that used in space travel robots including Rover and Pathfinder. The techniques taught are used for space exploration, decommissioning nuclear plants, manufacturing, and for performing surgery.
Professor Carsten Maple, Head of Computing and Information Systems, said: “This new course brings together robotics, computing and artificial intelligence to equip graduates with the latest knowledge and skills that are much sought after by employers.
“These are growth areas but few courses combine both robotics and artificial intelligence. The BSc provides sound theoretical and conceptual grounding in intelligent systems and is an ideal base for a career in research or industry.”
