The University of Bedfordshire has leapt a massive 24 places in the latest university league table issued by The Times newspaper today (16 August) – one of the biggest jumps recorded this year.
The annual Times Good University Guide has placed Bedfordshire 84th out of 113 institutions.
The ranking comes as students across the country receive their A level results and the annual clearing process gets under way.
Bedfordshire’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, said: “The release of this league table coincides with A level results and clearing, so it’s a timely reminder of the considerable progress we have made since launching the University of Bedfordshire just 12 months ago.
“Earlier this year we saw applications to the University rise by 41.2 per cent. Just last week, we rose six places in the Guardian’s league table for teacher training.”
But Professor Ebdon warned that the increasing number of league tables continues to cause confusion for many. He said: “Although this is good news for Bedfordshire, it must be confusing for students and parents with an increasing number of league tables being published and ever-changing criteria. Furthermore, certain key factors are not being considered. We will continue to lobby the Government for one league table that is consistent and acknowledges the achievements of students and high quality teaching.”
The University’s clearing centre opened its phone lines at 8.30am today. The 30-strong team, which has been trained to offer advice and support to students, is expecting hundreds of calls from students who may be looking for courses via clearing.
Director of Student Recruitment and Admissions, Dr Moira Hampson, said: “Our message to students who don’t have a confirmed university place is to call our hotline.
“We will discuss their options and the courses available to them. Our team members are trained to help students choose the right course for them or simply offer general advice.”
Applications to the University of Bedfordshire can be taken right up until the first day of term and offers can be made over the phone. For clearing enquiries call the Clearing Hotline on 0800 013 0925.
