When it comes to reducing its carbon footprint the University of Bedfordshire is helping to lead the way by spreading the green message to a wider world.

A year since the Centre for Sustainable Technology (CoST) opened its doors the Luton-based team has been encouraging residents and businesses to take a closer look at their energy costs and to find ways in which they can become more environmentally friendly

The team, who have an established environmental reputation, have joined forces with other local, regional and national organisations. This has included working with the sustainable transport charity Sustrans, along with Luton Borough Council, on initiatives that could reduce travel costs and people's carbon footprint. This has included exhibitions and an award-winning recycled cycle scheme, to encourage people to use this environmentally friendly method of travel.

They are also involved in a biofuel initiative - a project to transform old industrial estates into low carbon green areas – and are establishing new environmental technology companies. In addition, they are setting up a low carbon club for Luton businesses.

CoST team member, Lynette Warren, said: “We are delighted with the positive response and interest that we have received from the public. It's encouraging that people want to do something to help the environment. We are also looking closer to home, encouraging students and staff at the University to become involved. This includes setting up the University Sustainability Group to make it a more environmentally friendly institution.”

She continued, “The group is in its infancy but given time and input from as many interested people as possible, both members of the public and businesses, we could make a significant contribution to reducing Bedfordshire's carbon footprint.”

CoST has established an environmental helpdesk that is supported by experts from a variety of regional centre’s of excellence, and exists in both a physical and virtual environment.

The University recently played host to a renewable energy event in conjunction with Renewables East, the agency for renewable energy in the East of England.

The event set out to inform Bedfordshire-based companies about how they could get involved in this emerging sector and highlighted the work being carried out by CoST.
