A professor from the University of Bedfordshire has addressed an international conference in Paris about the media handling of the forthcoming 2012 Olympic Games.
Garry Whannel, Professor of Media Cultures, and Director of the Centre for International Media Analysis at the University, was speaking at the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference in the French capital.
He along with Professor Raymond Boyle of the University of Glasgow presented the paper entitled, The 2012 Olympic Games: A comparative study of UK national and local press coverage 2005-2007. IAMCR is recognised as the leading international body for research in media and attracts scholars from around the world.
Professor Boyle is also a member of the Journalism and Olympic Games group which was set up by Professor Whannel in 2005. The group co-ordinates and promotes research into journalism, politics and the Olympic Games in the build-up to the 2012 Games in London.
Earlier this month Professor Whannel was also a keynote speaker at the Leisure Studies Association Annual Conference in Brighton. His talk, Grumpy Old Men and Women, looked at the place of critical discourse in cultural analysis.
In the
autumn his latest book goes on sale. Blowing
the Whistle: Culture, Politics and Sport Revisited, is an update on his
original book published in 1983.
Professor Whannel said: “This book is for the general reader although it is still on the reading lists of many Sport Studies courses, from GCSE to Master’s level. It has been out of print for almost 20 years so I have updated it, adding another 50,000 words of new material on the theme of culture, politics and sport. It contains original research as well as a semi-autobiographical essay.”
