The University of Bedfordshire Pipe Band beat off stiff competition to win its Grade at the World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green last week.

The band competed against 45 other pipe bands in the grade 4B category including those from Scotland, Italy, Canada, the USA and Pakistan to take the top prize, and become the first English band to win any grade at the competition.

The World Pipe Band Championships have been held every year since 1930, and for the competing bands it is the culmination of a year’s preparation, rehearsal and practice.

Bedfordshire Pipe Major Tony Doherty said: “The band achieved a remarkable success and put in a huge amount of effort and practice leading up to the competition. We are fortunate that we can use the excellent rehearsal facilities at the University’s School of Media, Art and Design.”

The current Grade 4B band was started in 2003 with the aim of teaching and improving the skills of young pipers. In 2006, the band became All England Champions in its grade at Ashbourne in Derbyshire and in May this year at the Scottish Championships, its second major competition, the band achieved 4th place in its grade against 25 other bands.

The band’s win at the World Pipe Band Championships coupled with its performance at the Scottish championships is likely to secure promotion to grade 4A for future competitions.
