Members of the public are invited to the University of Bedfordshire’s Celebration of Christmas at St Paul’s Church in Bedford.

The seasonal festival of dance, music, poetry and singing takes place on Monday 10 December, at 6.30pm.

The audience will enjoy performances by Biddenham Steel Band, university dance students, and Queens Park Lower School pupils will sing a medley of carols.

University shuttle bus driver Giuseppe Barile, a professionally-trained opera tenor singer, will also impress with carols in Italian and Latin. Giuseppe sings for the choir of his local Italian church, St Francesca Cabrini, in Woburn Road, but standing in front of the congregation singing a solo is a far cry from his day job.

The main theme of the event is ‘making links’ and the congregation will be given the opportunity to reflect on how they would like to see something changed that would make for a better world. Their thoughts will be written on tags and displayed on a Christmas tree in the church.

Professor Kate Jacques, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Bedford campus, said: “The event is open to everyone and we hope people who live in the town will join us, where there will be carols for the congregation to join in with.

“We are fortunate to have a classically trained opera singer among our staff and it was wonderful to hear him unlock his hidden talents and showcase his voice at last year’s carol service. He made a big impression on everyone who attended.”

PE graduate Michelle Rowe will also give an update about fundraising efforts to help disadvantaged pupils at a school in Malawi. Last year, the congregation gave generously to help buy much-needed equipment for the school and refurbish classrooms.

Doors to the church open at 6.15pm. Free mulled wine and mince pies will be served after the event.
