The University of Bedfordshire’s Red Cross centre has been short-listed for a prestigious national Higher Education Volunteering Award.

The Centre, which opened in Autumn 2006, beat off competition from more than 1,000 entries from universities around the country to reach the final, which is held at Wembley Stadium on Friday 07 December.

The awards, sponsored by CRAC: The Career Development Organisation, and in association with the Higher Education funding Council for England and the Higher Education Academy, are given to exemplary volunteering projects and student and staff volunteers who have shown significant commitment to or exceptional execution of volunteering activities.

Andrea Thorogood who overseas the centre alongside the British Red Cross Bedfordshire Branch said: “This is a tremendous achievement for the students involved in the project. The Centre has only been open for a year, so it is a tribute to the students and the Red Cross that the project has been so successful.

“We wanted a centre at the University that was run by students for students. We are hoping to arrange training and events to link in with the academic year to maximise the opportunity for students to get involved.”

A team of eight students run the centre and carry out all of the marketing, fundraising, training and event management.

The centre is self-supporting and home to more than thirty volunteers who provide support for fellow students and members of the local community as well as raising awareness of the organisation and providing training opportunities.
