Sports Personality of the Year award winners

Sport stars of the future will be awarded scholarships at the annual Bedford Sports Awards on Monday (10 Dec).

Nine University of Bedfordshire students who compete nationally and internationally in their chosen sport, will be presented with grants under the University’s Sport Scholarship Scheme. Students are given up to £1,500 a year to support their sports commitments during their studies.

The scholarship scheme also recognises athletes on the fringes of national selection, including those who participate in development squads or training camps.

The ceremony hosted by Bedford Borough Council will take place at the Corn Exchange, where the town will be celebrating its local sporting heroes.

Dr Gordon Mellor, Principal Lecturer in Sport, who will be presenting the scholarships, said: “We have a long tradition of sporting excellence at the University and a high calibre of sports students. We are very pleased to be helping students fulfil their potential at national level, building hopefuls for the 2012 London Olympics, and helping those on the fringes to break through to national level. The grants go towards training and competing, and athletes from any sport can apply.”
