A new book illustrating sports massage techniques has been launched by an academic at the University of Bedfordshire.
The Complete Guide to Sports Massage, written by Senior Sports Therapy Lecturer Tim Paine, is a practical handbook for athletes and Sports Therapy students learning about the relief and treatment of muscle pain, as well as how to maintain muscle balance and improve flexibility.
Speaking about his latest work, Tim said: “The book is full of illustrations and packed with jargon-free information and practical tips. It includes principles and techniques of massage, injury management and post massage care, as well as practical guidance on working at sports events.”
The former rugby player has provided sports therapy training for more than 16 years. In 1994 he formed the Academy of Sports Therapy UK, and in 2001, set up Sports Therapy UK offering specialist training courses.
Working with staff and students from the University, Tim has run sessions with many sporting professionals to monitor their fitness and help them manage sporting injuries. Earlier this year, they worked with the MK Lions basketball team testing players’ on court agility and fitness levels. Each year, Sport Therapy students treat participants in the London Marathon and have also ran treatment centres at the Ben Nevis Challenge.
In 2006 a final year Sports Therapy student was snapped up by the Estonian national rugby team to help them prepare for their first-ever international game.
