Award-winning virtual learning programmes for social workers featuring courtroom footage and video interviews have gone live on the internet.

Academics, students and practitioners across the country are now able to widen their knowledge about social work law by downloading interactive case studies, as well as test their skills with quizzes and self-assessments.

Professor Michael Preston-Shoot, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at the University of Bedfordshire, has set up ten virtual learning programmes on the Social Care Institute for Excellence’s (SCIE) website, along with Professor Suzy Braye, Head of the Social Work at the University of Sussex.

The ‘All in a Day's Work’ self assessment tool, which helps social workers reflect on their every day approaches to assess their knowledge of the law, recently won the Association of Learning Technology’s 2007 Learning Object Competition.

Professor Preston-Shoot said: “The e-learning activities are additional learning aids for social work students and practitioners across England and Wales to reflect on the laws which underpin their work and enable them to think about the ethical issues they are faced with.

“As well as self-study aids, academics can integrate them into their curriculum. They can also be incorporated by social care trainers into training programs.”

The two professors will now research the benefits of e-learning objects and the outcomes for students using them. They will also monitor the development of the use of e-learning across six universities.
