Pupils
from schools around the county got a helping hand with their PE A level course
work at the University
of Bedfordshire last Wednesday
(7 February).
Year 12 students took part in specially-designed workshops supporting the A level curriculum, and learnt about furthering their education and careers in PE and Sport Science.
The interactive workshops, hosted by experts from the University, looked at the socio-cultural, physiological and psychological aspects of sport.
Dr Paul Beedie, Principal Lecturer in Socio-Cultural Aspects of Sport and organiser of the event, said: “As the local University for schools in Bedfordshire, we aim to help support the delivery of PE and build important educational relationships with our local schools. We also wanted to give students the chance to learn about University life and get a taster of what higher education has to offer.”

During the visit, students
had the opportunity to try out the facilities at the newly-opened £8m Physical
Education and Sport Science Centre at the Bedford
campus. Staff demonstrated how to monitor the amount of oxygen the body uses, measure
body fat, analyse blood and look at how the body acclimatises to hot and cold
environments.
Schools taking
part in the PE Conference included:
Dr Beedie added: “Through the exciting programme we also informed students about the variety of courses and careers available to the them, to inspire and motivate the next generation of sport scientists and PE teachers.”
