Church-goers at St Mary’s in Luton got a surprise last Sunday when the University of Bedfordshire’s Vice Chancellor stepped up to give the weekly sermon.

Professor Les Ebdon was invited by Rev Nick Bell to lead the Sunday service to coincide with Education Sunday, which the Anglican Church marks every year.

The University boss, who is also a Baptist lay preacher, focused on a passage from Isaiah 1 verse 17 ‘learn to do good’, and explained that the verse was still relevant today because you are never too old to learn about the universe, the planet, people or God.

Speaking to the 300-strong congregation, he said: “God wants us to do our best and achieve and that’s why education is so important. Learning allows us to do better in life but education isn’t all classroom-based because we learn as we go through life.”

Listening to the Vice Chancellor, along with dozens of students, was University Chaplain Howard Thornton. He said: “It was wonderful to see our Vice Chancellor speaking to the congregation. He gave a very inspirational sermon. He pointed out that understanding your faith can inspire you to further your learning – the two go hand in hand - and that’s something I truly believe.”

The University Chaplain runs weekly events, including film and music nights, at its centre on Vicarage Street. To find out more call the Chaplaincy on 01582 453236.
