Dancers with the ‘X’ factor are being invited to attend auditions for an innovative new dance course being offered by the University of Bedfordshire.
The new BA (Hons) in Dance and Professional Practice auditions take place on 21 March and 9 May, at the Bedford Campus.
Helen Bailey, Principal Lecturer in Dance, said: “Nationally there has been a 43 per cent increase in applications to dance courses and the University has responded to the demand with the development of the new course.
“I think the interest stems from the fascination with TV dance shows which is sweeping the nation, such as Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing on Ice, So You Think You Can Dance? and Strictly Dance Fever, as well as the popularity of musicals, which are currently enjoying a boom in ticket sales.
“A recent Government initiative in encouraging the growth of creative industries in the UK has also led to a major re-evaluation of the role and function of the performer in contemporary British society, which has had a profound effect upon the way in which universities approach and teach dance and performing arts.”

The new dance degree focuses on professional practice. Students will be part of newly-developed University dance company. They will manage touring programmes of their own performance work, as well as delivering workshops in schools and colleges, preparing the students for work after university.
They will also explore the many career options now available to dancers, including performance and choreography, as well as working with different groups in the community and training organisations.
The course will start in September and be run from the purpose-built dance studios in the £8m Physical Education and Sport Science Centre. Students’ work will be showcased at the newly built 280-seat Bowen West Theatre which will open later in the year.
Those running the course will have significant professional and academic expertise in areas of dance performance, choreography, education and community practice.
